As you know, AYSO is a volunteer organization. That means that the coaches, board members, field liners, concessions, and the referees are all volunteers.

You may also have noticed that there have not been very many referees at the fields.  Four to be exact – none of which have kids in the program. That is where the you (parents and players) come in. We need more referees!!!!  Both adult and youth (12+ years).

To that end, we are asking for both adult and youth volunteers to become referees.  Referees are an important part of the game.  They not only teach and reinforce the rules of the game, but also provide a safe and fun playing environment for the players. Also, there are many benefits to refereeing for both adults and youths – especially for players. Primarily, you learn the rules of the game.  For adults, you get to see the kids play from a different point of view than anyone else.  For youths, they learn skills such as decisiveness, conflict resolution, and leadership that reach beyond soccer.  Specifically for players, it not only gives them a better understanding of the game, but a better understanding and respect of the referees.

The referees in AYSO go through training to become Regional Referees.

There are two parts – an online course available on AYSOU, and an in-person training session on Saturday, November 20, 2021.  The online course must be completed before attending the in-person session.  Each part is approximately 4 hours.

To take the online portion of the training class, please go to AYSOU using the link on our webpage – www.ayso823.org. Once you log into AYSOU, click on the ‘online courses’ tab, then open the ‘Regional Referee Training’.  You may also go through the “AYSO’s Summary of the Laws of the Game”, but it is not needed to become certified.

To sign up for the in-person portion of the training class, please use the following link:
